Basic Grammar Rules in English – Sentences and Nouns

Sentences and Nouns

For effective communication, “Sentence Structure” is very important.

So, what is a Sentence? A sentence is one that makes complete sense. It begins with a capital letter and ends with a Punctuation. A sentence needs to express a complete thought.

The structure of a sentence includes Subject(எழுவாய்) and Predicate(பயனிலை). It can covey any type of message as following:

  • Assertive Sentence or Statement. (சாதாரண வாக்கியம்) E.g. This is a sentence.
  • Interrogative Sentence or Question. (வினா வாக்கியம்) E.g. Is This a sentence?
  • Imperative Sentence or Order/Suggestion. (கட்டளை வாக்கியம்) E.g. Write a Sentence.
  • Exclamatory Sentence or Surprise/Shock. (வியப்பு வாக்கியம்) E.g. This is a Sentence!

Now back to Subject and Predicate.

Subject – The first part of a Sentence that denotes a Noun(பெயர்ச்சொல்). It’s the naming part of a Sentence.

Predicate – The second part of a sentence that contains a verb and something about the object. It has all the action.

E.g. Sentence: Mary likes to play chess.

Here, ‘Mary’ is the Subject. ‘Likes to play Chess’ is the Predicate.

So, what is a Noun? A Noun is a word that identifies people, places, or naming things.

E.g. Mary, The Taj Mahal, Chair.

The first five different types of the noun are:

  • Common Noun (பொதுப் பெயர்ச்சொல்) – refers commonly to people, place or things. E.g. Dog, Boy, City, Country.
  • Proper Noun (சிறப்புப் பெயர்ச்சொல்) – refers to a particulate of the common noun group. E.g. Sheila, India, Monday.
  • Concrete Noun (நிலைப் பெயர்ச்சொல்) – refers to any name, place, or thing that can be seen, felt, and touched. E.g. book, building, tune.
  • Abstract Noun (கருத்துப் பெயர்ச்சொல்)– refers to nouns that can’t be seen or touched. E.g. honesty, happiness, friendship, humor.
  • Collective Noun (குழுப் பெயர்ச்சொல்) – refers to groups of people or things. E.g. family, team, a pair of scissors, audience.
